#27 The Clarity Sessions Podcast – What Is Your “I Could Never” Statement?

Have you ever heard of the term “limiting belief?”

I wasn’t aware of the impact of limiting beliefs until just a few years ago, but it’s completely changed the way I view success and think about big goals.

So what is a limiting belief?

A limiting belief is something that we think is true that we’re only holding onto as true because we believe it. We have adopted it and embraced it as part of our value system. But what that belief is doing is it’s preventing us from reaching the next level. It’s keeping us from getting out of our comfort zones and propelling our business forward to increase our impact and our income.

And if you think about it this way, a limiting belief is something that we might not even really have investigated. It’s just something that we adopted along the way. Maybe it’s something from childhood that we heard a teacher say once, something that maybe we’ve heard at church or from an organization and we’ve just assumed is true. What happens is you hit a point in your life where you’re confronted with this belief and you realize it’s limiting you. When you realize it’s a limiting belief, it’s time to take a look at it. It’s time to pick it up and go, “Wait a second. Is that really something I believe? Or is that just something I adopted because somebody else believed it?” So I think it’s very important for you to clarify your values, for you to know what you believe and why you believe it so you can investigate your limiting beliefs against your values.

As you create and launch your products and programs and clarify your audience, your message and your products, what often happens is these beliefs hit you out of nowhere and stop you in your tracks.

I want to share a question with you today that is going to help you clarify and identify what are some of the limiting beliefs in your life. Then I’ll share how to overcome that limiting belief.

A little exercise I like to do is to consider your “I could never” statements: “I could never x,y,z.”

Take out a piece of paper. Write “I could never…” and then a blank. Put on your favorite song and start writing everything you believe you could never do underneath that statement.

I could never own a 7 million-dollar home.

I could never have 10 horses.

I could never drive a Lamborghini.

I could never run for elected office.

I could never live in another state.

I could never start my business.

I could never make six figures from my business.

I could never talk to my wife or my husband about that issue.

Do you see how it starts to flow? And I’m not even going into specifics. I’m just leaving it pretty vague. This is exposing your limiting beliefs. This is what you believe, but here’s where the limit is. Why is there a limit there? What is it that makes you believe you could never do blank?

Next time you are putting together a video series or writing an email campaign for your business, and then all of a sudden you’re faced with a limiting belief, I challenge you to investigate it. Where is it coming from, and is it true? Do you want to live that way? It can sometimes sound a little harsh, but how long do you wanna live that way? How long do you want to keep that limiting belief? Do you want to live that way your whole life? Do you want to believe in your life that it’s true? What would your life look like without that belief? What would your life look like if you could just let go of those chains — if you could unhinge yourself from that belief and accept yourself?

I could never afford that car.

I could never get back in shape.

Really? Never? Because people do it every day.

I could never tell my wife about that.

I could never start my business.

My challenge to you is to recognize your limiting beliefs, and then write them all out. Investigate the belief and uncover the truth. Because I believe that your success is going to come from stepping outside of your comfort zone. Remind yourself that you are capable and your limiting beliefs are holding you inside of a place you no longer belong.
